Don't Make Me Think

I didn't come away from this one with specific takeaways about what should or shouldn't be done to achieve high usability for websites or applications. But it did provide some great ways to generally think about usability.

My key takeaways:

  • The easier something is, the more likely a person will be to do it. Make the sites/apps I'm working on as easy as possible to use. A person of average experience/intelligence or below should be able to use it.
  • People scan websites, they don't read them. And people often choose the first option that satisfies their goal or what they're looking for.
  • Every user comes to a site or app with a certain level of goodwill. Some begin with more than others. If you do things that diminish that goodwill, they will abandon your site.
  • Usability is a common courtesy.
